Monsanto is a publicly traded American multinational agrochemical and agricultural biotechnology corporation.
(Who We Are. (n.d.))
The two processes that are carried out to complete the creation of Bt cotton are performed by the Monsanto company, to make their two most common products Bollgard and Bollgard 2.
Bollgard was the first version of Bt cotton that was created, and became a commercially used and produced product in 1996.
(Verma, R. (2013, July 30))
However, before the commercialization of Bollgard, it was evaluated by GMO regulatory agencies. After studies had been conducted on safety of proteins, food/feed composition, and environmental safety, Bt cotton was deemed safe for human and animal consumption, and that it posed comparable or fewer risks to those posed by pesticides and insecticides used as the alternative, and the commercialization and production began.
(Purcell, J., & Perlak, F. (2004))
Bollgard, which was first commercialized as INGARD cotton in 1996, contains only the Cry1Ac gene, and targets a more limited amount of harmful insects, specifically targeting the cotton bollworm. Bollgard 2, however, contains two resistance genes, Cry1Ac and Cry2Ab, and therefore targets a wider range of harmful insects.
